Case Study: Manufacturing a Custom Cylinder

If you require a custom project cylinder—either as a spare part or a completely new unit—HL-Hydraulics is an excellent partner, as outlined in our previous blog post. If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, you can find it here.

In this article, we provide a brief overview of a recent customer project, highlighting the process of manufacturing a bespoke hydraulic cylinder tailored to meet demanding specifications.

Case Study: “Mörkö”

The customer had a critical hydraulic cylinder installed on their factory production line—but no spare on hand. Although they had previously prepared for this by keeping a backup, the original spare had been scrapped, leaving them vulnerable. If the cylinder in use were to fail, it would cause a major production shutdown and significant financial losses.

That’s where HL-Hydraulics stepped in—ready to design and deliver a new custom replacement cylinder to keep production moving.

The customer provided the original assembly drawing from 1969 for the hydraulic cylinder—measuring Ø330/200×5800, it was a truly massive unit (hence the nickname “Mörkö”, meaning “moster” in Finish). Using the drawing and supporting documentation, our experts began designing a new cylinder that matched the original in every detail.

Once the design and quote were complete, they were submitted for the customer’s approval. With the green light given, the project moved forward. As mentioned in a previous blog post, cylinder size plays a major role in cost—and in this case, we were looking at a significant investment.

Manufacturing cylinders of this size is not an everyday task, and we often find ourselves developing much smaller products. But the service and attention to detail is the same, no matter the scope of work.

Following the customer’s approval of the quotation, the official order was placed, after which HL-Hydraulics initiated material procurement and issued the required subcontracting orders. At the customer’s request, minor design adjustments were made, as the project schedule allowed for these revisions. Due to the size of the cylinder, material lead times are typically extensive.

Once the plans were finalized and materials received, assembly of the cylinder began. The completed cylinder was surface-treated in line with the customer’s specifications and delivered to their storage facility, ready to be deployed when needed to replace the original unit. We remained in contact with the customer during installation to ensure everything functioned exactly as intended—which is particularly important in large-scale projects such as this.
